Safe and Sound
Safe and Sound is an audio therapy designed to calm the nervous system by helping the body to gain a sense of safety and security—a prerequisite for healthy physical and emotional functioning.
Developed by Steven Porges, PhD, , the Safe and Sound Program is a revolutionary treatment based on the Polyvagal Theory. Polyvagal Theory teaches us that a healthy nervous system is always sensitive and attuned to recognizing cues of safety and danger in our environment. In the event of a threat, our nervous system is designed to shift to a state which supports the need to either fight, flee, or freeze. For many people this tendency to shift into a fight/flight/freeze response happens too easily, making it difficult to manage day to day.
The Safe and Sound Program consists of five hours of specially processed music that stimulates the muscles of the inner ear, teaching the autonomic nervous system to become less reactive and more relaxed. People who use the Safe and Sound Program report a range of positive responses including a greater sense of calm, relief from anxiety, panic, gastrointestinal problems, and jaw pain, as well as a decrease in auditory hypersensitivity.
